My Lyst | Mint + Mango

June 23, 2013

Hello friends, I hope you have all been enjoying the summer so far! We had a fantastic time on our cruise and I’ll share photos when I get the chance. I just discovered Lyst this week, where you can follow brands and be notified when your favorite items go on sale – really fun! While browsing (a.k.a. obsessing) I realized I’m drawn to shades of mint and mango. I love how these pieces all coordinate. The key to mixing two bright colors is to wear one print that ties them together, like this floral dress or a light scarf. What colors are on your wishlist this summer?

Mod Picks for Winter Wear

December 12, 2012

Mod Winter Wear
{ 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 }

Winter is well on the way – I saw snowflakes this week, just waiting for the snow to stick! Since moving to Ohio, I have been steadily building my winter wardrobe, starting with outerwear! I look for colors that match my existing winter accessories and my picks above in red and black are the perfect match for my houndstooth scarf – or maybe I just have Crimson Tide fever… (I realize not everyone pays attention to football here – but Alabama is in the BCS National Championship in January!!) In any case, Modcloth is currently offering 25% off outerwear and cold weather accessories, so naturally they were my first stop to shop new coats. I’m a little late in posting this, so hurry and check out the sale before it ends this Friday, 12/14! Happy shopping : )

Book Inspiration + Gift Idea

November 30, 2012

Book Inspiration{aunt susan’s cookbook | uncle clay’s books | wedding books 1 & 2}

I’ve been spending time this week looking up inspiration to create my own books and looking at some of the ones my family members have published. I wrote in my previous post about removing old projects so I can focus on the ones I am truly excited about. Finishing my wedding book is one project that is very important to me. Will and I have been married for about 2 and half years, but I am going to make this book! I’m currently using Blurb’s free software, Blurb Booksmart to make our photo book. While I decided to keep this project on my to do list, I did let go of the need to design the entire layout myself. Since I am a perfectionist and a graphic designer, I thought I had to. Once I decided to use their ready made layouts, my life got a whole lot easier.

I have received Blurb books as gifts so I know how beautiful and professional-looking they are. My Aunt Susan compiled all of her favorite and best recipes, which has become my most cherished cookbook. My Uncle Clay has created several books, including one about life in Portugal and Ukraine and photos of my grandfather’s life. I love that I can preview his books even if I choose not to buy them. When I make my books, I definitely want to share them with my friends online.

You don’t need a lot of design skills to make your own books using Blurb. Their beautifully designed book templates allow you to create books with little to no design experience. As a designer, I like that I have the option to upload designs that I created in InDesign. With the downloadable template, you can be sure that you have the correct dimensions and margins. Since I am busy working full-time, it’s great to have pre-made layouts included in their software, which I can customize to meet my needs. It’s a win win situation, no matter your skill level!

There are many inspiring examples of the types of books you can make. I already have 3 more ideas in my head, but they will have to wait! Now is the perfect time to give a book to as a personal gift to your friends and family. If you just got married, create your wedding book and give it to your parents as a thank you for all of their love and support. If you are a new mom, a photo book is the perfect way to remember your sweet baby’s first year – I know grandparents especially love photos of their grandbabies! Get started on your custom photo book as a gift to yourself or a loved one this holiday season!

Your turn: What will you make your book about? Who are you so excited to give your book to?!
