New City, New Life

March 13, 2015

Since writing about freelancing and career doubt, I started working full time for Dagher Printing. It was a great experience and I learned so much about the print industry and strengthened my skills as a graphic designer. While there, we won an American Graphic Design Award from GDUSA magazine on an octagon-shaped brochure I designed. I now understand the things that usually held me back from using a local printer, like what kind of paper stock to use and how to prepare files for die cutting and special inks. I am armed with knowledge that will help in my business and career in the future.

After a little over a year in Jacksonville it was time for us to move on again. I enjoyed our time in Jax and will truly miss being near the ocean and our family. However, it’s very important to me that we stay close to our parents and our new home is a lot closer to both sides, mine and Will’s.

We are now in the Music City, Nashville!

We’ve been here for only 2 weeks and I’m already seeing signs that we made the right choice. I feel more motivated to pursue my passions, even while searching for a full-time position. I’m starting to check more things off my 101 in 1001 list: Just last week I had the opportunity to be an extra on ABC’s “Nashville” and met some great new friends! Will loves sports and we have enjoyed going to the Predators hockey games and the SEC basketball tournament. We are attending church at Covenant Presbyterian and have found our lives enriched by the messages we hear each week. We’ve been so blessed during this short time and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next.

Congratulations on your move to Nashville! It sounds like an exciting opportunity! It was great meeting you in Jacksonville and I’m sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet up with you again. We got so busy with family visits. I bet there are a lot of awesome design jobs in Nashville. How’s it going there so far? Are you loving it?!

Hi Kara! Thank you, we are loving it! I’m seeing some great design jobs and cool companies here, so I’m networking and applying as much as possible. Hoping to find one soon! I’m also sorry we didn’t meet again. Once we made the decision to move, packing and preparing was all I could think about! My sisters-in-law are still in Jacksonville so I’d love to introduce you if you want to meet new friends there. How’s your job and Etsy business going?

That’s awesome, Mary! It sounds like a really exciting fresh start. I definitely understand how much energy goes into moving. It has taken us almost a year to get our house in order (painted, purchased furniture, new carpeting, painted all of our kitchen cabinets, etc). I’d love to see you next time you’re in town and meet your family! My job’s going well and Etsy seems a bit slow lately. I think Etsy got over-saturated with shops and it makes it harder for people to find our shops. My husband and I are expecting our first child in early October, so we’ve been busy prepping for his/her arrival.

I’ll let you know next time we visit : ) Congrats and best wishes for your baby on the way! Sounds like you’ve had your hands full this year. Do you sell your items in any stores or just Etsy? A family friend in Jax Beach owns a store that sells handmade items from local artisans. Since your shop is mostly wedding accessories, if you have anything coastal or beachy that’s usually what they go for. I can email you their info if you’re interested!

Sounds awesome! Thank you! Yes, it’s certainly been an exciting and busy few years. We used to sell our items in a bridal boutique in Buffalo, NY, but right now we’re just selling on Etsy. What’s the name of the shop at JAX beach? We have hand dyed cotton scarves that might work in a shop like that. I’ll have to think of what else I could make. How are things in Nashville? How’s the job hunt going?
